South Hill Centre, in partnership with South Hill Church, run a number of activities / courses and events for people in the local community.

SHC also works with a number of local organisations to host courses and events which fall within the remit of the Centre’s community objectives. Details of current offerings and information on how to join in can be found below:

  • STRIVE Hub - Employment Support +


    What is it and who is it for?

    A free drop-in support group funded by The Big Lottery and the European Social Fund through Hertfordshire County Council. The sessions are run by South Hill Centre for anyone in Dacorum who is unemployed, under-employed, threatened with redundancy or starting themselves up in self-employment.

    The group offers:
     - Free access to PCs, stationary, printing, etc.
     - Job search assistance
     - Mentoring and assistance to complete job applications
     - Training advice and signposting
     - Individual CV and specimen application letter creation
     - Peer review, encouragement and support
     - Business start up advice and support
     - Confidence and Personal Development
     - Support in overcoming barriers to learning and/or employment
     - Links to other voluntary organisations and voluntary work opportunities
     - Free refreshments and a warm welcome

     

    When does it meet?

    The 'STRIVE HUB' meets every Tuesday 10am-12pm and Friday from 10am-1.30pm.

    Additional on-going 1-1 support outside of these times can be offered for those who have the right to work in the UK and are registered unemployed or not working.

  • CAP Job Club +

    This group runs as an extension to the existing employment support activity at South Hill Centre.

    Run by South Hill Church the Christians Against Poverty (CAP) Job Club works on a 1-1 basis with those needing more focussed help and support in looking for employment or self-employment..

    The Work Club starts with a 8 week course running through all elements of employability skills – CVs, Interviews, Job searching, confidence building. It develops to look at key barriers to employment with specific courses looking at anger, self-esteem, money management, confidence building  etc…

  • Pathway Mentoring & Support for Ex-Offenders +

    Working with the Charity 'Clean Sheet', a small team at SHC befriend, provide support to ex-offenders in resettlement and offer ongoing mentoring.  The prisoner receives regular visits in the weeks prior to their release from prison, and will be met at the gate on the day of release.  We help the ex-offender plan for a better future and expect change in their lifestyle and decision-making as they work towards their goals.
     
    Each ex-offender understands that they are the ones who can make the changes necessary to put crime behind them and lead a settled, law-abiding life.  We offer support and guidance towards welfare, health and in tackling dependency on drugs or alcohol, working with associated agencies and towards training or employment opportunities. 
     
  • Movie Nights +

    Movie Nights

    From time to time South Hill Church host a ‘movie night’ on either a Weds or Friday night – 6pm until 10pm.

    The evening starts with a meal, followed by a film (chosen by those attending on the night from a selection of different options) and a time for discussion.

  • Young Discoverers Pre-School - Monday to Friday +

    Young Discoverers Pre-school, based in our purpose-built Early Years Centre, provides a first-class learning experience for young children before they attend school.
    It provides ten weekly sessions during term time  for children from two and half years to rising fives.

  • Squealers Toddler Group - Tuesdays - Wednesdays +

    Squealers Parent/Carer and toddler group is held twice a week on Tuesday and Wednesday mornings during term time. It is for children up to three years old.

    Squealers provide a safe, stimulating environment where children can play and parent/carers can relax and make friends.

  • Table Talk - Alternate Thursdays -12-3 PM +

    Table Talk is based in our coffee lounge. It is largely for senior citizens and is a bi-weekly Thursday lunch club held from 12 noon until 3.15pm. There is a rolling programme which provides an opportunity to get together with friends and enjoy good food and entertainment.

  • The Zone - Monday 6-7 PM +

    This is a Monday evening junior youth club for 7-11 year olds. It provides a great space for table top Wii, table tennis, air hockey, craft and cooking.

  • Mens Football - Tuesday 9-10 PM +

    This has been running now for several years and they meet all year round on a Tuesday evening, 9pm till 10pm on the astro pitch at Sportspace in Hemel Hempstead.

  • Computer Courses +

    South Hill Centre working with other local organisations, such as Dacorum Communities for Learning (DCFL), are able to offer a number of computer courses -  from ‘basics for beginners’ through to starter and advanced courses in MS Word and MS Excel.

  • CV Courses +

    South Hill Centre runs a number of these courses throughout the year. They are run as soon as there is enough interest for them.

    For those who are looking to create a new CV or update their existing one with the latest formats, tips and techniques for getting you through the door for an interview.

    Specific 1-1 support can also be offered during and post the course.

    The course is usually run free of charge.

  • Introduction to Enterprise (self employment) Courses +

    South Hill Centre runs a number of these courses throughout the year. They are run as soon as there is enough interest for them.

    For those who are wondering what is involved in starting up their own business but are not quite ready to commit to it yet. Over two half days (9hrs) it runs through the basics of what is involved in starting one up. Looking at the concept, what is involved in a business plan, marketing, tax implications etc.

    Specific 1-1 support can also be offered during and post the course, however participants are usually signposted to organisations following the course  if the decision is made to take the next step into developing a full blown business plan.

    The course is usually run free of charge.

  • CAP Money Management Courses +

    South Hill Centre runs a number of these courses throughout the year. They are run as soon as there is enough interest for them.

    The course covers the basics of money management and budgeting..

    Specific 1-1 support can also be offered during and post the course.

    The course is delivered by South Hill Church on behalf of Christians Against Poverty (CAP). The course is usually run free of charge.

  • English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) +

    South Hill Centre works with Community Action Dacorum to host a number of these courses throughout the year. Usually run from South Hill Centre for 10 weeks on Mondays during term time. A small administration charge may apply.

  • Muddle free Maths for Parents +

    South Hill Centre runs a number of these courses throughout the year, usually 5 weeks of 2hrs in length. They are run as soon as there is enough interest for them.

    Participants must be parents and not have an existing maths qualification (Level 2 or above)

    Want to improve your Maths skills but haven’t had the time until now?

    Do you understand your child’s methods for doing addition and subtraction?

    Are you panicked by partitioning?

    Despair of division?

    Muddled by multiplication?

    Then come to our friendly sessions and find out how you can help your child and yourself.

    A crèche may be provided for some courses, but booking in advance is required.

  • Craft Courses +

    South Hill Centre runs a number of these courses throughout the year. They are run as soon as there is enough interest for them.

    For those who would like to learn new techniques, develop their skills, create something special for that special occasion or simply meet up with others in the local area to have fun. Crafts run include things like: Jewellery making / Gift Making / Silk painting / Sewing / Seasonal (Easter/Christmas) Craft / Glass Decorating / shrink plastic craft

    Usually run as a six week course.

  • Alpha +

    South Hill Centre runs a number of these courses throughout the year, usually 10 weeks in length run during the evenings. They are run as soon as there is enough interest for them.

    Alpha is a series of interactive sessions that freely explore the basics of the Christian faith. No pressure. No charge.

    The evening starts with a meal, followed by a short video presentation and a time for discussion.

    The course is delivered by South Hill Church in Hemel Hempstead.
